A thick roasty maltiness to the nose with appealing hints of blueberries.
The taste followes the nose in much of the same way. Good interaction and balance between Belgian chocolate, yeast and spices. Kind of spritzy in a medium to full body. Mild floral hops are noticeable towards the finish.
Longlasting aftertaste. Smooth brew and a good startingpoint for the beer enthousiast to experience the dark abbey style.
Pour out the beer smootly and leave the sediment in the bottle. Refermentation in the bottle. This abbey dark ale pairs very well with a Belgian chocolate dessert.
The name Witkap alludes to the white cowls of the Cistercians.
The Witkap abbey beers were brewed since 1929 in Brasschaat (north of Antwerp), by Hendrik Verlinden, a former brewer of the Westmalle Trappists and were in fact the first ever abbey beers. Later, in 1979, Brouwerij Slaghmuylder, from Ninove, took over the brewing and the Witkap name. Today, the Witkap abbey beers are considered to be among the best representing it's style.
