'Abbatia De Dunis, Koksijde Anno 1138'
Deep orange to reddish amber colour with a nice frothy head. The head is quickly disappearing though.
Sweet malty flavours with hints of a sour red ale noticeable.
Nice and lively mouthfeel. A fruity-spicy taste with accidic features. Interesting. The 7 % alcohol is actively present, but with a good level of drinkability.
The finish is spicy and sweet. Top-fermentation and refermented in the bottle.
Outside Belgium, the St-Idesbald brand might also be known as Duinen Abbey beer.
The number 1138, on the label refers to the moment in which the local abbey Our Lady of the Dunes was taken up in the Order of Citeaux, as an adopted daughter of the Cistercian abbey of Clairvaux. During the Reformation, in 1566, the Duinen Abbey was destroyed. A small chapel was saved and is dedicated to Sint Idesbald, a small village on the Belgian coast.
